Fun Facts: The invention of the limousine was inspired by the sedan chair. The sedan chair was a luxury form of transportation first utilized in the 1600’s for royalty in France and then introduced to the common man in England as a type of taxi. The lucky individual was carried while sitting upon an opulent chair enclosed in a cabin-like structure. Mounted on parallel poles that were carried by two impressively sized men, and even for them it was very heavy. 


In 1972, the first limousine was born. Limousine is a French word. It was named after the hood on a cloak worn by shepherds. Through the 17 and 1800s, these horse-drawn limousine carriages seated 3-5 people. The first automobile limousine was built in 1902 and the passengers sat outside under a covered area for privacy. In 1916, the Society of Automobile Engineers gave limousines an official definition, a closed car seating 3-5 people inside with a driver’s seat outside. In 1928, the first stretch limousine was presented, but only the very wealthy members of society could indulge.
